Using Technology to deliver mental health services to children and youth in Ontario (2013)

In brief

Technologies such as the internet, mobile applications, and video-conferencing are great tools which can be used for the delivery of children and youth mental health services.

Researchers recently looked at the impact of these technologies as well as their advantages and disadvantages in order to be able to develop strategies and policies to improve the use of technology.

EENet has developed a Research Report Round-up of the recent report “Using Technology to deliver mental health services to children and youth in Ontario.”

Research Report Round-ups are brief summaries of research reports, presented in a user-friendly format.

What this report is about

Technologies such as the internet, mobile applications, and video-conferencing are great tools which can be used for the delivery of children and youth mental health (CYMH) services. Researchers recently looked at the impact of these technologies as well as their advantages and disadvantages in order to be able to develop strategies and policies to improve the use of technology.

Methods used:

  • Consultations with policy and decision-makers
  • Review of research on the use of technology in mental health services to children, youth and their families
  • Scan of the existing services and the perception of technology in mental health services to children, youth and their families

The reviews and consultations brought to light the need to link the use of technology to deliver CYMH services with mental health policy planning. Videoconferencing and online mental health service delivery (including providing prevention, assessment, diagnosis, counseling and treatment programs) are future priority initiatives.

How this report can be used
